The Next 24 Hours

After baby boy Finnley was born at about 1:30pm on February 4th, Super Bowl Sunday (and we had no TV, sorry to my husband). These moments were just as unforgettable as birthing him! Finnley was laid on me and we just looked at each other, my husband and I laughed a little as I couldn’t believe I had just done that! It just took determination and the right mind set to make it all happen!

For the next hour my midwife and labor assistants left us while baby, my husband and I bonded. We were left alone in peace in the comfort of a king size bed covered in pillows and quilts. When they came to check on us they took baby’s measurements right on the bed with us. They ensured both of us were looking good and healthy for the night and by 6:00 pm the birth house was empty and because it had snowed so much, we stayed the night. There was a dock-a-tot provided for baby to safely co-sleep with us (which I preferred) I was working with him on nursing and everything was quiet and peaceful.

The next morning after being checked on a final time we drove home to our other three boys. I will never forget how they all were totally silent as we walked through the door. I was nervous of their reaction but they just wanted to see and hold their new little brother. Life was new and different for everyone in our house for a few weeks, with a new member of the family, a mom recovering and a new routine to work out. The fact that we had three other kids didn’t change the feeling of ‘newness.’ There has always been a time of adjustment after bringing home each new baby!
